WIND Web Project Team Biographies

Stephen Anthony

A crackerjack software engineer, Stephen contributed to the WindWeb project by drafting the functional spec in collaboration with Lucille Wilson, Dave Presberg and Tom Coffin. He also provided guidance on the overall architecture of the system before moving on. Stephen has over 10 years experience as a software engineer, developing software in various applications, from SCSI device drivers to Java middleware. He has also experience in technical management, where he acheived an on-time delivery rate of 90% over multiple release cycles. He is looking for a software architect role helping to craft the overall systems architecture. He is well versed in translating business requirements into technical requirements and can work with both technical and non-technical people to bring software products that meet real business needs to market on-time.

Beth Cohen

Beth Cohen served in the role of project manager and shepherd of stray cats
and software engineers in the initial stages of the project. She was
responsible for finding the original hosting company, while berating Fred
and others into developing some content for the site. She is an IT manager
who has a unique understanding of how IT infrastructure is built and
managed, having worked as the Lab Manager and IT Director for the
engineering division of BBN -- the company that invented the Internet. She
is presently providing consulting services to small and mid-sized
companies, helping them to create IT infrastructure to gain competitive
advantage. She is available to help you at bfcohen@luthcomputer.com.

Coburn Davis

Coburn Davis is an experienced software engineer, who is the successor to "Pres", as the leader of the development team.

Coburn is also a member of the Project Coordination Team (PTC).

Doug MacKenzie

Doug is an experienced programmer/analyst who has developed software
applications for both mainframes and PCs, as well as for the Web. He knows a
wide variety of programming languages, ranging from COBOL and Fortran, to C, C++,
and Java. He has done consulting work for companies and organizations in a wide
range of industries including finance, government, retailing, insurance, and
publishing.

P.J. Gardner

P.J. was leader of the WIND Web project for over six months, Content Manager for several more months, and a member of the Project Coordination Team from the beginning. She has since moved on to other projects but was grateful for the opportunity to learn about the special challenges of managing a cross-functional volunteer team of over 50 professionals with a constantly changing membership!

During P.J.'s time with the project, she contributed to writing project plans, helped to arrange for the first web host, organized a logo contest, created page prototypes and an initial information architecture, and worked with the facilitators of WIND to launch the project.

P.J. is a documentation professional with experience in technical writing, information architecture, web design, and documentation project management. She is founder of Boston-IA (www.Boston-IA.org), an organization bringing together Information Architecture and Internet Accessibility, and she is an information architecture consultant specializing in accessible web designs.

Jim Farmelant

Jim Farmelant is a software engineer with several years experience in developing Windows applications using C++, MFC, Visual C++, C#, and VB.

Most recently, as a member of the development team for the WIND web project, he has been busy learning Java and J2EE and writing code for the project. He is now employed as a software engineer at SyberWorks.

David Kramer

David Kramer is currently part of the Project Coordination Team, as well as Systems Administrator for the project. He is also involved in the Database Design team and the Security team. His specialty is UNIX software development.

David has 15 years experience in software design, analysis, and development, as well as experience in hands-on team leadership. His strengths are his diversity and depth of experience, perseverance, ability to learn new technologies quickly, and organizational skills. He is looking for a permanent or contract Principal Software Engineer or hands-on Team Lead position with room to grow and opportunities to apply my experience.

David's current resume can be found at http://www.thekramers.net/queue/.

Ellen McMillan

Ellen was a member of the Web Content Team for several months and worked diligently, gathering information and creating web pages in HTML. She is a mid-career Software Quality Assurance Engineer with a programming, technical writing and teaching background and is currently working as an independent consultant. This project was a very rewarding one for her as she loves interviewing people, researching information and writing.

Ellen was very appreciative for this opportunity to work with a group of very dedicated technical people who shared their knowledge for the technical advancement of all involved. With their help and some coursework, Ellen learned HTML and developed web content for a real web application. She is still a member of WIND and offers support and help to other members whenever she can.

Nancy Van Schooenderwoert

Nancy Van Schooenderwoert is the WIND Web Teams' official advisor on Agile
methods.

She brings a systems perspective to software engineering for real-time and
embedded systems. She has extensive experience in building large-scale, real-
time systems for flight simulation and ship sonars, as well as software
development for safety-critical applications such as factory machine control
and medical devices. Nancy has held positions in electrical, systems, and
software engineering, as well as in test design.

Having seen the problems fostered by a "hero" approach to software
development, Nancy became convinced that a team approach is the best way to
build reliable systems efficiently. She became an XP practitioner in 2000, and
a founder of Agile Rules / XP Embedded in 2003.

Other interests include recreational mathematics, especially nonperiodic
tilings and the invention of games. She will soon be publishing a game based
on penrose tilings. Nancy holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering
from Rochester Institute of Technology. Nancy is a member of the IEEE 1648
Working Group for Establishing and Managing Software Development Efforts Using
Agile Methods. She also edits the "Ask the Experts" column for the Agile
Times.

David L. Presberg

"Pres" has been a member of the Project Coordination Team since proposing that configuration control of the source code should be done with CVS. (This is a "speak up and get volunteered" project.) He has also contributed to the Functional Specification and has been working on the Object-Oriented Design team. When Java coding begins, he will be contributing code to the system.

"Pres" is a Software Engineer with hands-on experience building compilers and processor development tools. Targets of his compilers and tools have ranged from embedded microprocessors/DSPs and network communications NPUs through large scale parallel programming systems (SIMD, Vector, and Multiprocessor MIMD). He prides himself on having excellent performance analysis, tool testing, and debugging skills. Java may be the 25th programming language he has learned.

Simon Rosenthal

Simon is our imported Assistant Sysadmin, and master of the lending library.

Ken Ruskin

Ken is part of the Project Coordination Team, as well as Software QA Manager/Team Leader for the project. He is also a member of the Application Design/Development team. Ken has nearly thirty years experience in software design, development and quality assurance. He has experience in hands-on engineering as well as team leadership. His greatest strengths in QA are his focus on defect prevention rather than just defect detection and his understanding of the business issues involved.

Lucille Wilson

Lucille Wilson is a software engineer who had delivered two software projects into production without bugs.

Lucille has a broad set of business experience in ERP systems, financial services, manufacturing, and hospital software. She also has 20 years of experience in software design, analysis, and development, as well as experience in hands-on team leadership. Her specialities are database design and optimization, organizing teams of developers and users and producing highly functional business systems.

Lucille has worked on the WINDWeb Project Coordinating Team and has been the development leader for the WINDWeb project. She helped write the functional specification, database design, class diagrams and sequence diagrams. She has also matched mentors and learners.
